In India, Google operates cutting-edge research labs, sales and engineering offices, and now, for the first time, a dedicated Data Center Intern program that gives students a front-row seat to the physical backbone of its services. The Data Center Technician Intern role is designed for technically-savvy students who want to experience the real-world challenges of operating massive server farms. Interns will work side-by-side with seasoned Operations Engineers and participate in hardware deployment, network cabling, system upgrades, and preventive maintenance across Google’s state-of-the-art data facilities in Delhi or Mumbai. The 12-week summer stint blends hands-on hardware work with troubleshooting of Linux-based servers, giving a holistic view of how software and infrastructure converge at scale. # Key Responsibilities - Assist in the physical installation, de-commissioning, and upgrade of servers, storage, and networking equipment. - Perform cable management, labeling, and documentation to maintain accurate topology maps. - Diagnose and resolve hardware failures, logging trends and escalating critical issues to senior engineers. - Configure, patch, and troubleshoot Linux operating systems on production servers. - Conduct preventive maintenance checks, ensuring compliance with safety and reliability standards. - Collaborate with remote engineering teams to reproduce and fix bugs reported from the field. - Participate in data-center tours and knowledge-sharing sessions to understand power, cooling, and sustainability initiatives. - Lift and move equipment up to 50 lb, adhering to ergonomic best practices. - Document all activities in internal ticketing and asset-management tools. - Contribute ideas for process improvements and automation of routine tasks. # Requirements - Proficiency in Linux (Ubuntu/CentOS) and basic Python for automation. - Knowledge of TCP/IP networking, VLANs, and DHCP/DNS. - Familiarity with hardware diagnostic utilities and Google internal monitoring platforms. - Strong communication skills, team collaboration abilities, and problem-solving mindset. # Benefits - Access to cutting-edge facilities and competitive stipends. - Mentorship from world-class engineers and a culture that encourages curiosity and impact. - Opportunities for personal development, with the chance to contribute to services that power billions of daily queries. - Potential for full-time offers upon successful completion of the internship in roles such as Data Center Operations Engineers, Site Reliability Engineers, or broader technical roles across Google Cloud, Infrastructure, or Product Engineering.
